Description
Elongated snakelike body without scales. There is a single nostril opening between the eyes, and 7 rounded gills on each side. The mouth is funnel-like without jaws equipped with several rows of sharp small teeth. They have a cartilaginous skeleton instead of bone.
Color
The back is dark blue-gray to a brown color, the sides are brown/yellow and the abdominal light colored.
Average size
30-35 cm / 1-2 kg
Age
5-7 years, as larvae before metamorphosis, 8-9 years total.
Record size & age
50 cm / 5 kg and 12 years old.
