A thick, leather-like leafy plant, with visible air vesicles, that are usually placed one on each side of the middle nerve. Also known by the common names Black Tang, Rock Weed, Bladder Fucus, Sea Oak, Black Tany, Cut Weed, Dyers Fucus, Red Fucus, and Rock Wrack. It is the most important perennial algae in the Baltic Sea. It is important for other species, as food and as well as a nursing place and being an excellent area for hiding from predators.

50-100 cm In waters with more movement the air vesicles decrease, and the size will be shorter and thinner. On protected coasts it will be wider with more air vesicles.
